What kinds of animals live in the Gulf of Mexico?

Many marine species may be found throughout Mexico's beaches. Clear waters teem with tropical fish in sections of the Gulf of Mexico and off the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. Many species' migratory pathways pass via Mexico. Thousands of ducks and geese migrate into the Sierra Madre Occidental each year. They follow a path that takes them from Canada to South America where they find food and shelter during the winter months.

Fish are also very important for life in the Gulf of Mexico. Fish provide food for many other sea creatures - including turtles - and their presence or absence can have significant effects on the health of ocean ecosystems.

There are several types of fish that can be found in the Gulf of Mexico. Red drum are popular in seafood markets worldwide because of their firm flesh and red color. They can grow up to 3 feet long and weigh over 100 pounds. Seatrout, blackfish, white bass, and freshwater drum are just some of the other fish that can be found in the Gulf.

Sea turtles are also part of the animal kingdom and can be found in both land and water. There are three main groups of sea turtles: caracaras, hawks, and plasterers. Caracaras are large sea turtles that range in weight from 420 to 660 lbs and have a thick shell that is used as a weapon if it gets caught in vegetation at the bottom of lakes or ponds.

What are the habitats in the Gulf of Mexico?

The Gulf of Mexico is home to a wide range of environments. Bays, estuaries, coral reefs, islands, and banks are some of the most visible of these environments. An estuary is formed when fresh water meets saltwater water and combines. Estuaries are vital feeding, spawning, and nursery environments for a wide range of species (4). Coral reefs are areas of limestone or other hard structures covered with algae and animals of the reef community. They can be found in tropical oceans all over the world, but they are by far the best known from the Caribbean and the Pacific Ocean regions (5). An island is a large mass of land that is completely surrounded by water. Islands vary in size, from small patches less than one square mile in area to very large ones more than 100 square miles. There are many islands in the Gulf of Mexico; some of the most well known are Cat Island, Gaspar Island, Long Island, Matagorda Island, Mississippi Island, Sabine Island, Ship Shoal Island, and Vermilion Island (6). A bank is a low, sandy shoreline consisting of deposits of silt and clay washed ashore by rivers or the ocean. Banks can be anywhere from a few hundred yards to more than 20 miles long. The greatest number of banks in the Gulf of Mexico are found along the Louisiana coast (7).

Bays are shallow bodies of water bounded by land on three or four sides.

What kinds of birds live in the Gulf of Mexico?

Marshes in the Gulf of Mexico provide critical feeding and breeding habitat for a variety of bird species, including shearwaters, northern gannets, frigates, royal terns, and gulls. Brown pelicans, diving ducks, wading birds, and piping plovers are among the bird species most affected (a threatened species). Many other species may also be found in the Gulf of Mexico, but they typically avoid human activity.

Birds in the Gulf of Mexico need food to eat, so people can affect them by changing the quality or quantity of food available in their habitats. For example, if you throw away food waste, this will reduce the amount of food available for birds. Alternatively, if you put out more edible food, then more nutritious meals will be available when birds visit your yard or beach. Either way, by choosing not to dispose of your food properly we are preventing birds from eating healthy meals that they need for survival.

Birds in the Gulf of Mexico depend on clean water too, so people can affect them by causing pollution in our waterways. If water quality is poor, birds may not be able to swim or fish safely, which could lead to death due to drowning or ingestion of toxic chemicals. Fish are an important part of many birds' diets, so when humans remove fish from waters bodies cannot function correctly and this can cause birds to die prematurely from dehydration or starvation.

What marine life is in the Gulf of Mexico?

The Gulf of Mexico is home to 29 marine mammal species, including well-known species such as bottlenose dolphins, humpback whales, minke whales, sperm whales, and West Indian manatees. Many of the marine mammal species found here are vulnerable or endangered. The Gulf also contains over 500 species of fish, most of which are edible and many of which are used for food by people elsewhere in the world.

Marine mammals are important to human culture because of their ability to communicate with each other using sound. These animals serve as inspiration for musicians around the globe. They also provide essential benefits to people who live in close proximity to them. Marine mammals help control erosion by feeding on sea grass that would otherwise be washed away during high tides. Scientists have also discovered that certain fish are attracted to the flanks of swimming mammals, likely because of the aroma given off by their sweat. This "olfactory fishing" technique is used by some Native American tribes in Louisiana and Texas.

People have been living near the Gulf for thousands of years. Early inhabitants included Paleoindians, who lived here about 10,000 years ago, and Mesoamericans, who arrived about 5,000 years ago. Both groups were hunter-gatherers who made their homes out of stone tools and weapons recovered from the area now known as Mississippi.

A new civilization arose about AD 1200 in what is now coastal Alabama.
